Our history and activities

Our team began working as an informal transgender community initiative back in 2023. We held events in welcoming spaces and often joined the work of other trans and LGBTIQ organizations to keep our community supported. On 5 August 2025, following a brief period as the TransEmancipation initiative, we formally founded and registered Emancipation NGO to build on this work and strengthen the voices of transgender and intersex people in Ukraine. Today, our team and volunteers are trans and intersex people working across several cities in Ukraine.

We hold regular in-person meetups for the trans and intersex community in Kyiv and Lviv, stay connected through trusted online chats and develop our work in other regions. We share information about transition and help people find trans-friendly professionals and services. Direct requests, surveys and feedback from the community, which we are part of ourselves, shape the topics and formats of our work, guided by the principle “Nothing about us without us”.

Through a project supported by the Swedish Federation for LGBTQI Rights (RFSL), we opened Kyiv’s first in-person space for the trans and intersex community since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. We also organized regular events in several cities and continue to strengthen the visibility of the community and our organization.

Another part of this project is collecting structured feedback on doctors, institutions and services, and helping with individual requests to find suitable professionals or institutions. This turns shared community experience into a resource for mutual support.

In 2026, we co-organized the Trans Forum in Kyiv with the Coalition of Ukrainian Trans Organizations (CoUTO), creating a space to exchange experiences and discuss shared priorities. That year, we also organized a trans contingent at KyivPride, strengthening visibility and the right of trans and intersex people to speak for themselves.

With support from Outright International, we implemented a humanitarian project combining direct assistance to trans and intersex people during the war with organizational development. We helped with medicines, lighting and backup power during electricity outages.

We combine assistance with urgent needs with public education, community organizing and advocacy for the rights of trans and intersex people. Our partners and donor organizations support this work, including TGEU, Footage Foundation and others.
